Past Perfect Simple e Past Perfect Continuous

I tempi del Past Perfect descrivono un'azione che avviene nel passato prima di un'altra azione o momento passato. Generalmente scegliamo la forma progressiva (Past Perfect Continuous) quando vogliamo mettere in risalto la durata dell'azione.

Info 1: Il Past Perfect Simple

Il Past Perfect Simple si forma con l'ausiliare Had + il participio passato ed è uguale per tutte le persone. Corrisponde al trapassato prossimo italiano, anche quando quest'ultimo è formato con l'ausiliare essere.

When we arrived, our friends had already eaten.

Quando arrivammo, i nostri amici avevano già mangiato.

We'd left before the event.

Noi eravamo partiti prima dell'evento.

Info 2: Il Past Perfect Continuous

Il Past Perfect Continuous si forma con Had + been + gerundio (-ing) e in italiano si traduce con il trapassato prossimo, l'imperfetto, o la costruzione Stava + gerundio. Spesso lo utilizziamo per evidenziare un'azione di lunga durata o che ha avuto effetti visibili successivamente.

Esempio

I'd been waiting for hours when the doctor finally saw me.

Aspettavo da ore quando il dottore finalmente mi visitò.

I was tired because I had been running all day.

Ero stanco perché stavo correndo da tutto il giorno.

She''d been sleeping, but she was awake when I arrived.

Lei aveva dormito, ma era sveglia quando sono arrivato.

Nota bene: non si può usare il Past Perfect Continuous con i verbi di stato (non-action verbs). In questi casi si usa sempre il Past Perfect Simple.

Esempio

I hadn't needed any help until that moment.

Non avevo avuto bisogno di aiuto fino a quel momento.
