Simple Past e Past Continuous: forme, usi, differenze
In poche parole

E | prendono solo la D | solve -> solved |

1 vocale + 1 consonante (monosillabici) | raddoppiano la consonante + ED | stop -> stopped |

forma base | past simple | utilizzo |
speak | spoke | I spoke to him yesterday. |
have | had | We had a great holiday last year. |
sing | sang | She sang a sad song at the concert. |

Esempio
When did you go home?
1. Principalmente per parlare di azioni concluse nel passato, accompagnate da espressioni come: yesterday, last year, a week ago, etc.
2. Nelle narrazioni, per descrivere sequenze di eventi.
Esempio
I saw a fantastic film last night!
Ho visto un film fantastico ieri sera!
She opened the door, walked to the chair and sat down in silence.
Esempio
I wanted to ask you a question if you don't mind.
affermativa | | negativa | |
I/he/she/it was | going | I/he/she/it was not (wasn't) | going |
you/we/they were | going | you/we/they were not (weren't) | going |

Esempio

Lei stava pelando patate mentre io stavo facendo la salsa.
He was always showing off at parties.
Non faceva che farsi vedere alle feste.
It was raining when they finally arrived.
Pioveva quando finalmente arrivarono.
Info 7: Past Continuous vs Past Simple
Esempio
I was booking a holiday when the power went off.
Finn called me while/as I was watching TV.
Nota bene: il Past Simple può essere solo introdotto da when, mentre il Past Continuous può essere introdotto da when, while o as.
Info 8: Used to e Would
Esempio
She used to take piano classes twice a week.
I would never answer the phone as a child, I was too shy.
Nota bene: la forma negativa di Used to è Didn't use to e la forma interrogativa è Did (you) use to?, mentre Would al negativo diventa Wouldn't e l'interrogativa si forma facendo inversione con il soggetto: Would (you)...?
Esempio
Did you use to play football as a kid?
No, I didn't. In fact, I wouldn't go near a ball.
Giocavi a pallone da bambino?
No. Infatti, non mi avvicinavo a un pallone.
Nota bene: Il Past Simple può essere usato al posto di Used to senza differenza di significato.
Esempio
I used to go to Croatia on holiday when I was little.
I went to Croatia on holiday when I was little.
Andavo in vacanza in Croazia quando ero piccolo.
