Il Simple Present: to Be, Have got e altri verbi
In poche parole
Il Simple Present si usa principalmente per esprimere azioni abituali (habits) e verità permanenti (general truths). In generale si forma con l'infinito senza il to, aggiungendo una -s alla terza persona singolare affermativa. Ad eccezione dei verbi to Be e Have got, tutti gli altri verbi richiedono l'ausiliare Do alla forma interrogativa e negativa.
Info 1: to Be
Il verbo to Be corrisponde al verbo essere in italiano ed è un verbo ausiliare. La forma affermativa ha una versione contratta, mentre la forma negativa può averne fino a due.
AFFERMATIVo | NEGATIVo | interrogativo |
I am (I'm) | I am not (I'm not) | am I? |
you are (you're) | you are not (you're not) (you aren't) | are you? |
he / she / it is (he's) | he/she/it is not (he's not) (he isn't) | is he/she/it? |
you are (you're) | you are not (you're not) (you aren't) | are you? |
we are (we're) | we are not (we're not) (we aren't) | are we? |
they are (they're) | they are not (they're not) (they aren't) | are they? |
Info 2: Have got
Il verbo Have got si usa soprattutto nell'inglese parlato britannico ed è composto dal verbo to Have seguito dal rafforzativo got. Come to Be, è un verbo ausiliare e pertanto non necessita il Do/Does nelle forme negative e interrogative.
affermativo | negativo | interrogativo |
I have got (I've got) | I have not got (I haven't got) | have I got? |
you have got (you've got) | you have not got (you haven't got) | have you got? |
he / she / it has got (he's got) | he / she / it has not got (he hasn't got) | has he / she / it got? |
you have got (you've got) | you have not got (you haven't got) | have you got? |
we have got (we've got) | we have not got (we haven't got) | have we got? |
they have got (they've got) | they have not got (they haven't got) | have they got? |
Nota bene: nell'inglese americano l'uso di Have got è meno frequente. Al suo posto, viene utilizzato il verbo to Have con gli ausiliare Do/Does per le forme interrogative e negative.

Have you got a dog? No, I haven't got a dog. I've got two cats. | Do you have a dog? No, I don't have a dog. I have two cats. | Hai un cane? No, non ho un cane. Ho due gatti. |
Info 3: Altri verbi
Per la maggior parte dei verbi al Present Simple occorre aggiungere una -s (o -es) alla terza persona singolare, mentre le forme affermativa e negativa si costruiscono con gli ausiliari Do/Does.
AFFERMATIVo | NEGATIVo | interrogativo |
I play | I do not (don't) play | do I play? |
you play | you do not (don't) play | do you play? |
he / she / it plays | he/she/it does not (doesn't) play | does he / she / it play? |
you play | you do not (don't) play | do you play? |
we play | we do not (don't) play | do we play? |
they play | they do not (don't) play | do they play? |
Nota bene: I verbi che terminano in -s, -ss, - sh, -ch, -x, -z, -o prendono -es alla terza persona singolare. I verbi che terminano con una -y preceduta da consonante perdono la -y e prendono -ies.
