Esprimere potere: i verbi modali di possibilità
In poche parole
I Modals of ability sono Can, Could, May e Might. Si usano per esprimere una possibilità o impossibilità che avvenga qualcosa, per chiedere un permesso e per concederlo o negarlo.
Info 1: Can
Can si usa solo al Simple Present. In italiano si traduce come potere, sapere o riuscire.

USO DI CAN
Can può avere diversi significati, tutti al Present Simple:

Nota bene: Can si usa anche per esprimere una capacità o incapacità momentanea.

Info 2: Could
Could si usa al Past Simple (potevo), al Present Conditional (potrei) e al Perfect Conditional (avrei potuto).

USO DI Could
Could può avere diversi significati, al passato, al presente o al futuro.

Particolarità di could
Could e Couldn't possono avere anche i seguenti usi e costruzioni particolari:

Info 3: Be able to
Be able to non è un modale e ha tutti i tempi verbali. In italiano si traduce come essere capace/in grado di e spesso si usa come verbo sostitutivo di Can e Could per i tempi verbali mancanti.

Nota bene: to Be able to si può anche usare al Present Simple per esprimere sorpresa di fronte a una capacità e al Past Simple per indicare un'abilità in un momenti specifico.

Info 4: May
May si traduce in italiano come posso e potrei e si può usare sia al presente che al passato (May + Have + participio passato). Per la Short Answer di solito si usa Can. Ecco come si costruisce:
