Las formas verbales pueden utilizarse solas para elaborar frases en diferentes contextos. Sin embargo, combinar más de una permite crear textos más complejos, por lo que saber qué formas verbales funcionan bien juntas es muy útil para expresar ideas o situaciones.


Info 1: Past Simple and Past Continuous

Esta combinación es una de las más básicas. El Past Continuous indica una acción que se estaba desarrollando durante un momento determinado. Para añadir detalles sobre lo que ocurre mientras esa acción tiene lugar o sobre qué sucede después se usa el Past Simple.

You watched TV while I was writing on my diary


Info 2: Past Simple and Past Perfect Simple

El Past Perfect Simple toma un punto del pasado como referencia y habla de algo que ocurrió incluso antes. Así, combinar esto con el Past Simple sirve para ordenar cronológicamente situaciones.

I had drunk all the water when the waiter brought the food
We hadn't seen you singing until you appeared on TV


Info 3: Present Simple and Past Simple

Aunque parezcan tiempos completamente diferentes, el Present Simple y el Past Simple pueden combinarse para explicar el motivo por el que ocurre algo. Es decir, una acción realizada en el pasado afecta al presente.

He is angry with me because I forgot his birthday
They won the race, so they have a new medal


Info 4: Present Simple and Future Simple

El Present Simple junto al futuro con will se emplea para formar el llamado First Conditional, un tipo de oración que se usa para hablar de situaciones que pueden ocurrir en el futuro si se dan las condiciones necesarias.

Jack will move to Sweden if he doesn't get a job
I will take an umbrella in case it rains


Info 5: Present Continuous and Be Going to

Otra forma de expresar el futuro es con be going to. Esta forma, usada junto al Present Continuous, sirve para indicar el motivo por el que se realiza una acción.

I am wearing a tie because I am going to be the best man at their wedding
