Titanic's Tragic Fate: A Historic Maritime Catastrophe
The Titanic departed from England in 1912, it was its first voyage to New York. Its length was 900 feet and its weight was about 50,000 tonnes. It was said to be indestructible, however, tragedy struck on April 14th and the ship sank after colliding with an iceberg.
Info 1: What happened?
Four days after its departure and with more than 2,000 passengers on board, the ship crashed into an iceberg and began to fill with water. After a few hours, the Titanic broke into two parts and sank in the ocean.
Unfortunately, there were only twenty lifeboats, not nearly enough for all the passengers. The crew tried to keep calm and help women and children first, as the passengers began to climb into the lifeboats in order to survive. However, most weren't lucky. Only 705 passengers out of the original 2,000 survived.
Info 2: After the sinking
For a long time, nobody knew where the ship had exactly sunk, but in 1985, the wreck was found by a research team. Finally, in 1998, it was recovered from the water.
Nowadays, you can see these recovered pieces of metal at the Titanic exhibition in Las Vegas. Also, if you are interested, you can go see different objects from the original ship as they are showcased in several museums in the USA. Some of these objects are: luggage, bottles of perfume, jewellery and engraved name cups.
