Summary

Pregnancy and health

In a nutshell

It is important to look after your health whilst pregnant as the mother's health affects the baby's health. Pregnant people should look after their health by eating a balanced diet, getting regular exercise and avoiding drugs.

Health

Definition

Health means being free from disease and having a healthy mental state. Being healthy is important for everyone, but it is especially important during pregnancy.

The mother's health

The placenta allows the blood  of the foetus and mother to get very close so oxygen, nutrients and waste can be exchanged. If the mother smokes, drinks alcohol or takes drugs, harmful chemicals can get into her bloodstream and pass onto the foetus through the placenta. These harmful chemicals can slow the growth of the foetus and increase the risk of a stillbirth, premature birth or lifelong health conditions.
