In a nutshell

3D shapes have three dimensions, such as length, width or breadth, and depth or height. 3D shapes have a number of different properties.


3D shapes

3D shapes are solid objects. The basic properties of 3D shapes are shown below:

  • Faces - A face is a flat or curved surface on a 3D shape. For example, a cuboid has 6 faces, and a sphere has 1 curved face.
  • Edges - An edge is the region where 2 faces meet. For example, a cube has 12 edges.
  • Vertices - A vertex (singular) is a corner where edges meet. For example, a cuboid has 12 vertices.


Types of 3D shapes

There are many different types of 3D shapes. Below is a table which shows some of the 3D shapes and their properties:

  • 1 curved face.

Cuboid
  • 6 faces (all rectangular, or a mixture of rectangles and squares).

  • 8 vertices.

Square-based pyramid
  • 5 faces (1 square and 4 triangular).
  • 8 edges.
  • 5 vertices.

Cone
  • 2 faces (1 circular around the base and 1 curved).
  • 1 edge around the base.
  • 1 vertex.

Cylinder
  • 3 faces (2 circular and 1 curved).
  • 2 edges.
  • No vertices.

Tetrahedron
  • 4 faces (all triangular).
  • 6 edges.
  • 4 vertices.

Triangular prism
  • 5 faces (2 triangular and 3 rectangular).
  • 9 edges.
  • 6 vertices.

Hexagonal prism
  • 8 faces (2 hexagonal and 6 rectangular).
  • 18 edges.
  • 12 vertices.
