Hepatocytes remove harmful products and oxygen from the blood. Hepatocytes break down harmful products which are returned to the blood for excretion.
Excess amino acids are broken down in the liver. Amino acids are nitrogenous compounds which cannot be stored easily so excess amino acids must be broken down to prevent damage.
The liver breaks alcohol down into ethanal and further digests it into acetic acid. Acetic acid is then sent to the kidneys for excretion.
